Micha Hamel's Requiem from 2012 is a rarely rich piece of music. An over ninety-minute, bursting-at-the-seams theatrical song cycle for tenor, actor, and ten instrumentalists, in which a multitude of musical styles passes in review.
Just as much as it is a deeply felt, personal work, this musical-poetic contemplation on death also proves to be a political piece, an activist work that reflects on the role of classical music in society. But above all, it is a contemporary lyrical intertwining of text and music in which humor is never far away and the melodies are compelling.
This live recording, performed by an ad-hoc ensemble of excellent musicians, is a unique document of a memorable series of performances at the Holland Festival, featuring standout roles from actor Porgy Franssen and tenor Marcel Beekman. Then-artistic director Pierre Audi said of Requiem: "it is a masterpiece".
