Improvised music – the reunion
Thirty-eight years after the first and only time that Jonathan Impett and Maarten van der Valk — trumpeter and timpanist/percussionist of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century — together with guitarist and pianist Bob Helsloot, bassist Wilbert de Gooijer, and saxophonist Peter Massink, shut themselves away in an Amsterdam studio for three hours to improvise... a reunion was decided upon.
So the gentlemen met again, sadly without Peter Massink, who has since passed away. Under the direction of sound engineer Jochem Geene, they improvised for a full day. At the end of the day, Raaf Hekkema — saxophonist of the reed quintet Calefax and son of the legendary trumpeter Evert Hekkema — performed his own arrangement of his father's Simplex. That's how, four decades later, the foundation for this album came together, again in a single day. We chose to frame the 12 improvisations with two older recordings featuring Peter Massink. Intuition, the reunion is thus both a joyful reunion, a new introduction to Raaf, and above all a tribute to Peter — a great musician and friend from the very beginning.
